Successful open day at the Leuna chemical site

Last Saturday, 7 September 2024, the Leuna chemical site opened its doors and offered thousands of visitors the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at one of the most important chemical sites in Europe.

In perfect summer weather with bright sunshine and 30 degrees Celsius, the number of visitors equalled the high level seen before the coronavirus pandemic. Innovation, sustainability and close ties with the region were the focus of this year's event, which was jointly organised by InfraLeuna, the city of Leuna, Wohnungswirtschaft Leuna GmbH and numerous local companies.

„We are overwhelmed by the great interest people have shown in our chemical site. The open day showed how important it is to make our work accessible to a broad public and to create transparency”, emphasised Dr Christof Günther, Managing Director of InfraLeuna GmbH. „We see ourselves as an integral part of the region and want to further intensify the dialogue with the population.”

In total, more than 2,400 free tickets were used for the round trips and destination trips on the chemical site. The destination tickets to selected companies at the site were already sold out by midday. In addition to the popular tours of the site, the company tours and presentations on current projects and innovations, guests were offered an extensive supporting programme. Families were able to obtain information at various information stands and hands-on stations, while food and musical entertainment was provided.

The mayor of the town of Leuna, Michael Bedla, was also delighted with the successful day: „The Leuna chemical site has been the economic heart of our town for many decades. It was great to see how the citizens used this opportunity to find out more about the local working world. The close cooperation between the city and industry is a key factor in the positive development of our region.”

The open day also provided a platform to showcase the cooperation between the industry and the housing sector. Steffen Gebhardt, Managing Director of Wohnungswirtschaft Leuna GmbH, emphasised the importance of this cooperation: „For us as a housing company, it is important to offer attractive living space to employees at the site. The Leuna site stands for jobs, but also for quality of life - and that was impressively evident today.”

The open day ended on a positive note. The Leuna chemical site presented itself as a modern, future-orientated location that plays an important role not only in the region, but also beyond. The organisers were satisfied and have already announced the next Open Day for the beginning of September 2026. 2026 will be a special anniversary year. It will not only be about the changes and innovations at the chemical site, but also about two special anniversaries: 30 years of InfraLeuna and an impressive 110 years of chemical history at the Leuna site.
